Six hours with a driver instead of a domestic flight
There are flights between Sofia and Varna, but once you add the trip to the airport, check-in, waiting and the taxi at the other end, a car with a driver is often not much slower, especially for a family or a group with luggage. You leave from your door when you are ready, you can stop whenever you want, and you arrive at the hotel entrance.
It is also the easiest way to combine Sofia and the sea in one holiday without renting a car: no driving on unfamiliar roads, no fuel, no parking at the resort.
Where to break the journey

Veliko Tarnovo
The old capital sits roughly halfway, on hills above the Yantra river. Tsarevets fortress and the old streets with craft shops are an easy two-hour visit, and it is the best lunch stop on the route.
Arbanasi
A village just above Veliko Tarnovo with old stone houses and churches with painted interiors. Combine it with Tarnovo if you have a little more time.
Madara
Closer to Varna, near Shumen. The Madara Rider, a horseman carved into a cliff, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and only a short detour from the road.

- Minivan – up to 6 passengers, or 4 with a lot of luggage. On a six-hour trip the extra space is worth it.
